Real Madrid have quite a few tough decisions to make over the coming months regarding contracts. There are a number of players whose current deals run out in the summer and many of them still have roles in Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Now, it remains to be seen if the club are able to hold onto them or not.

Rumours broke out recently that Real Madrid have verbally agreed a contract extension with Karim Benzema. That is great news. The situation of Luka Modric is still up in the air though.

Modric is 37 years of age now and pretty much in the twilight of his career. His form has dipped a bit after the World Cup break as well. Thus, questions have been raised about whether he would be offered a contract extension by Real Madrid or not.

While Modric’s form in recent months has not been great, he has saved his best for the big games. The two legs against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 have been proof of that. They certainly seem to have impressed former manager, Harry Redknapp.

Redknapp managed Modric during their time together at White Hart Lane. And the manager has advised clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to consider a move for the Croatian.

As reported by HITC, Redknapp said talkSPORT Breakfast (16/03/23):

"“Is he out of contract at the end of the year? I think they are discussing whether they are going to give him another deal.“I tell you what. You would take him, even if you were someone like Liverpool. Take him back to Tottenham. He would come in and he is so great around the place. He plays every minute of every game. And he is still a fantastic player. You would get two years out of him.”"

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Modric. The best case scenario would be him staying on at Real Madrid. While he might have been a bit inconsistent lately, there is no doubt that he can still make things happen on the biggest stage. His experience and ability to deliver under pressure are invaluable.

If he was to leave, there would be no lack of interest in his signature. Could a return to Tottenham Hotspur lie in his future? Or perhaps a move to Anfield?
