Real Madrid will need to assess their squad in the summer. No matter how this campaign turns out, one thing that is quite clear is that Los Blancos do not have enough depth right now to compete in all three major competitions or perform at their very best level throughout the course of a long season.

On one hand, they need to bring in reinforcements. On the other hand, they must come to a decision about the futures of some players, who did not have a clear place in the team.

One player who falls under that category is Brahim Diaz. The Spaniard is currently out on loan at AC Milan and has shown flashes of brilliant from time to time. But at the same time, it is unclear if he would have much of a role at Real Madrid, even if he was brought back. And it also looks like he has caught the interest of Premier League clubs.

As reported The Sunday Mirror (19/03, p77) (via HITC), Chelsea and Newcastle United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Diaz’s situation.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Diaz. At 23 years of age, he would surely not want to return to Real Madrid, if it meant spending most of his time sitting on the bench at Santiago Bernabeu.

There is no doubt that Diaz is very talented. But at the same time, one has to wonder whether he is good enough to be starting for Real Madrid consistently. His numbers do not look the most impressive on paper.

It remains to be seen if the links to Chelsea and Newcastle United end up leading to something substantial. Rumours have also suggested that AC Milan would like to keep Diaz at the club.
