Real Madrid tasted their third straight defeat at the hands of Barcelona. First they lost 3-1 in the Spanish Super Cup final, then they were defeated 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semis and that has been followed by a 2-1 loss away at Camp Nou, a result that might very well have ended their hopes of retaining the La Liga title for good.
Thus, at this moment, Real Madrid are starting to look second best to Barcelona by quite some distance. And it is safe to say that things cannot carry on in this manner.
The early goal away at Camp Nou had raised hopes that they could come out with a win and revitalise their La Liga campaign. But Barcelona struck twice after, with a 92nd minute goal from Franck Kessie proving to be the winner on the big night.
There is not much left to say when you lose to a team three times in a row. But it looks like some of Xavi’s comments after El Clasico, did not go down too well with the Real Madrid coaching staff.
Real Madrid unhappy with Xavi’s comments after El Clasico
As reported by The Athletic, the coaching staff did not like Xavi’s comments after the game, in which he said that Barcelona had been superior to Real Madrid.
There is one more El Clasico left this season, and that is the second leg of the Copa del Rey semis. Real Madrid must win that game, because the La Liga title race is as good as over now, as they sit twelve points behind Barcelona with twelve league games to go.
Surprisingly, the Champions League might be their best hope of a trophy. They will be coming up against a relatively weak Chelsea side in the quarter-finals of the competition.
