Luka Modric has been a stalwart in the middle of the park for Real Madrid for over a decade now. But now, for the first time in a while, his future at the club looks uncertain. The Croatian maestro’s current deal runs out in the summer and he has not put pen to paper on an extension yet. Thus, it remains to be seen whether he will remain at Santiago Bernabeu come next season or not.

Not too long ago, Modric’s extension was viewed by most people as a bit of a formality. But his form has been on a downward trajectory since the World Cup and that has raised questions about his long-term future at the club.

It remains to be seen whether Modric will remain at Real Madrid or not. Most fans will surely be hoping that he does so and it appears that the Croatian wants the same as well.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Modric said:

"“I want to stay at Real Madrid, I hope it will happen.”"

Modric sends clear message about Real Madrid future

Modric has not been a nailed on starter for this Real Madrid team after the World Cup. But it is clear that Carlo Ancelotti still trusts the Croatian on the big occasions.

That was the reason why he got the nod in both games against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie. And Modric repaid the faith of the manager with two excellent performances against Jurgen Klopp’s side, even earning himself a standing ovation at Anfield.

Thus, it is clear that Modric is still capable of turning back the clock from time to time and put in big performances on big occasions. It is not just his quality that is important to this Real Madrid team but his experience as well. He might be 37 years of age, but the Croatian still has a lot to give.
