Centre-back is an area of the pitch where Real Madrid might need to bring in reinforcements soon. When the club signed Antonio Rudiger as a free agent, after his contract ran out at Chelsea, the hope was that the club were getting one of the best defenders in the world. But the German international has failed to reproduce the form that he had showcased under the management of Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.

On the other hand, the form of David Alaba has been on a downturn as well. Nacho has looked decent when on the pitch but he is 33 years of age and his contract runs out in the summer. Eder Militao has looked like the only centre-back in form lately.

Thus, Real Madrid could do with another centre-back. And one player that they have been linked with heavily is Josko Gvardiol. But there is plenty of other interest in the Croatian defender as well.

As reported by Football Insider, Liverpool are in the running to sign Gvardiol this summer. He is seen as an ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.

Gvardiol is considered by many as the best young centre-back in the world right now. He was the best defender at the recent World Cup as well, as Croatia finished third. And thus, it is not hard to understand why some of the biggest clubs are interested in him.

Other than Liverpool and Real Madrid, the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are also believed to hold an interest in the defender.

On the other hand, it’s believed that RB Leipzig would look for a transfer fee around €100 million to let Gvardiol go. It remains to be seen if Real Madrid would make a move of that magnitude or not.
