While much of Federico Valverde’s success at Real Madrid in the early stages of his career have been in a right wing role, it is important for fans to realise how important he will be as the midfield undergoes changes. His performances for Uruguay on the international stage are a reminder of just how high his ceiling is as a box-to-box midfielder.

In recent friendlies against Japan and South Korea, Valverde picked up a goal and an assist while playing as the most advanced midfielder for Uruguay. For his national team, he is relied upon to produce more creativity than at Real Madrid, and the development in his game has been encouraging.

Valverde has shown countless times for Real Madrid how his tireless running and versatility allow some of the more creative players to shine. And if he can combine these traits with consistent end product and ball progression from midfield, his potential is scarily high.

With more reliance on him, the Uruguayan has used his blistering speed to break down opponents’ lines and almost always makes the right decision on the ball.

For his goal, Valverde’s technique off the volley was immaculate as his strike hit the post, and then he was the first on the scene to tap the rebound into an open net. As for the assist, his inch-perfect delivery off of a corner is not something he is asked to do at club level, but once again the increased responsibility to produce for his national has led to him showcasing different aspects of his game.

Valverde has improved his end product this year significantly, albeit many of his goal contributions coming as a member of the front three. However, this role has given him more opportunities to become comfortable in and around the box, just as Uruguay’s reliance on him has improved much of his already superb midfield play.

Valverde is developing into one of the most complete and versatile players in the world. While currently his best use for Real Madrid may be in a wide role, the club should not forget how great a midfield option he is becoming as well.
