Real Madrid and Liverpool have taken part in some memorable matches in recent years, including a couple of Champions League finals. And Los Blancos have come out on top on most occasions when the two teams have met. While the Spanish giants have dominated the action on the pitch, it looks like the Reds did come out on top in the transfer market some years back.

The player in question here is Harvey Elliott. He has always been very highly rated and is still just 20 years of age.

Elliot joined Liverpool in 2019. And after being slowly integrated into the team over the years, as well as a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, he is finally getting some consistent football an Anfield this season.

It looks like Elliot was close to joining Real Madrid before Liverpool came in for him though. As reported by Caught Offside, he said while speaking on the We Are Liverpool podcast:

"“Yeah, I did [have a chance of signing for Real Madrid]. It was a number of things to be honest and I was close to going to Madrid, but as soon as Liverpool came in that was it, my heart was set on it because of being a Liverpool fan.”"

It is not hard to see why Real Madrid might have been interested in signing someone like Elliott back in 2019. He fits the profile of player that the club have been signing in recent years. They bring them in as youngsters and try to develop them into first-team stars at Santiago Bernabeu under their watchful eye.

We have seen this happen with players like Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and more in recent years. And somebody like Elliott might have been a solid addition for the club as well.

Elliott is 20 years of age and already playing regular football for Liverpool. Thus, it does feel like he has bright future ahead of him. But at the same time, it does not feel like he is a player who would have been making a big contribution for Real Madrid at this point of time. Thus, things might have worked out best for all.
