Real Madrid have been linked with Kylian Mbappe for years. And it had looked like it was going to become a reality in the summer of 2022, when the Frenchman’s contract with PSG was set to run out. All signs were pointing towards him ending up in the Spanish capital. So much so that he was applauded by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd in a Champions League game between the two sides.
Things took an unexpected twist though when Mbappe ended up extending his contract with PSG. It definitely left a bitter taste in the mouths of a lot of Real Madrid fans.
Yet, the rumours linking Real Madrid with Mbappe have never really gone away. And with PSG failing to impress in the Champions League once again, it might be only a matter of time before he ends up looking for a new challenge.
On the other hand, a recent social media post from Mbappe has grabbed the attention of fans. As reported by GOAL, the Frenchman posted on Instagram:
"“I just took part in the viewing of the club’s re-subscription campaign for the 23-24 season. At no time was I informed of the content of the interview. It looked like a basic interview during a club marketing day. I don’t agree with this published video. That’s why I’m fighting for the right to the individual image. PSG is a big club and a big family but it is especially not Kylian Saint-Germain.”"
Real Madrid handed Mbappe transfer boost
Several rumours have broken out in recent months about Mbappe wanting to leave PSG. His current deal is believed to run till the summer of 2024, with the option to extend it for a further season.
Despite that, Mbappe has continued to perform at a high level. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 31 goals and provided 8 assists in 34 appearances.
Signing Mbappe this summer does not feel like a realistic possibility. On one hand, it would take an astronomical transfer fee and Real Madrid have not really splashed out in recent years. And on the other hand, the club’s current relationship with PSG is not believed to be the best. The Frenchman arriving in the Spanish capital in the summer of 2024 as a free agent is something that could happen though.
