Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio meant that Real Madrid got themselves a 2-0 win over Chelsea in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie. Carlo Ancelotti’s team were dominant on the night in almost every department while the Blues had a man sent off in the form of Ben Chilwell.
Keeping that in mind, Chelsea will not be devastated with a 2-0 loss away at Santiago Bernabeu. While Real Madrid are very much in the driver’s seat, the Blues will have a chance to turn things around at Stamford Bridge.
The problem for them is, they are struggling badly in front of goal right now. Chelsea have not scored in four straight games now. In the Premier League, they have scored 29 goals in 30 games. Thus, it will be a huge ask of them to score thrice against the defending European champions.
Frank Lampard is not giving up hope of his side making a comeback in the second leg at Stamford Bridge though. As reported by Evening Standard, the Chelsea caretaker manager told BT Sport:
"“I just said to the players, ‘special things can happen at Stamford Bridge’.“They’re a very good team but we have to believe.”"
Lampard makes big claim after loss to Real Madrid
To be very honest, it is hard to see Chelsea making a comeback in the second leg. Especially against this Real Madrid side.
There might be a lot of issues with Ancelotti’s team, but nobody can question their ability to get the job done even when all the odds are stacked against them. And under the bright lights of the Champions League, they seem to raise their game up a level.
On the other hand, while Chelsea did almost pull off a miraculous comeback against Real Madrid last season, this is a very different team. They have a lot of new players and seeing them play, it just does not look like they have built up the required chemistry yet to challenge at the Champions League level.
