Real Madrid were heavy favourites coming into the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Chelsea and they showed exactly why. They absolutely dominated the Blues on the night in almost every department. Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio gave them a 2-0 victory on the night, and they might even be disappointed that they did not score more.
Taking a look at the numbers from the game, Real Madrid had 18 shots and 10 of them were on target. They had 57% of the ball as well.
On the other hand, Chelsea were a man down for more than a third of the game after Ben Chilwell got sent off in the 59th minute. And their best defender on the night, Kalidou Koulibaly, had to be subbed off early in the second half after picking up an injury.
Thus, the opportunity was there for Real Madrid to put this tie to bed and end any hopes of Chelsea making a comeback in the second leg. A 2-0 scoreline does not really do that although it does give Los Blancos a massive advantage.
Real Madrid dominate Chelsea and might even be disappointed
As Nizaar Kinsella tweeted out:
FT: Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea.

A scoreline that flatters Chelsea. Possibly the first time I've ever seen such a match where a team might say, 'they'll take that from losing 2-0'. Madrid superior, Chelsea are still a team of strangers. It could have been worse. #CFC #UCL #RMCF
While the tie might not be over, it is hard to see Chelsea make a comeback from this result. They might have almost pulled off something magical last season against Real Madrid, but this team looks completely different.
At the moment, they just do not seem to be playing like an unit. Perhaps it is just a matter of the club making too many signings in the same season. There just does not seem to be any chemistry in their play.
On the other hand, when they do have big chances, they fail to capitalise. The Blues could have easily gotten a goal at the Santiago Bernabeu if they were clinical. And they have not scored in four consecutive games now.
