Real Madrid got a 2-0 away at Cadiz to keep the La Liga title race alive, even though Barcelona are overwhelming favourites to go on and win it from here. The two players on the scoresheet for Carlo Ancelotti’s side on the day were Nacho Fernandez and Marco Asensio. Interestingly, both of their current contracts are set to run out in the summer.
That is one situation that Real Madrid have to work on over the coming months. There are a number of key players whose current deals are expiring in the summer.
The situation of Asensio is particularly interesting. While the likes of Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Nacho are well into their 30s, the Spanish winger is 27 years of age and entering his prime as a footballer.
He has proven himself this season as well, becoming a consistent contributor of goals and assists, even though he has not started often. And it is important that Real Madrid hand Asensio a new deal.
Real Madrid must hand new contract to in-form star
Asensio might not be a regular starter for Real Madrid at this point of time, but he is certainly an impactful member of the team, whether that be off the bench or the handful of starts that he has made. The club will have a very difficult time replacing the Spaniard if he does end up leaving in the summer as a free agent.
The goal against Cadiz was Asensio’s tenth of the campaign. Not bad for a winger who has barely started for Real Madrid and mostly been brought on as a substitute.
Yes, he might have put in underwhelming performances here and there but overall, there is no doubt that he makes a positive contribution to this team. Thus, it is important that Real Madrid hand him a new deal.
