Real Madrid lack of depth in their squad. Despite that, the club have done a very good job this season. While La Liga might be out of reach for all intents and purposes, they are in the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-finals. Thus, a double is still within reach. That would be a terrific achievement, considering all the obstacles that they have had to face.

Quite a few players deserve credit for stepping up to the plate when they were not expected to. Dani Ceballos falls under that category.

In the final year of his contract, expectations were that Ceballos would leave the club in the summer as a free agent as it seemed unlikely that he would be offered a new deal. After all, he had spent several years at the club without making much of an impact and even spent a couple of seasons out on loan at Arsenal.

Yet, when the situation called for it, Ceballos emerged as a key player for Real Madrid. And it looks like that is set to earn him a contract extension.

As reported by Relevo, the continuity of Ceballos at Real Madrid is getting closer. The idea of the club, who will propose a long-term contract of between three and five years, is to leave its continuity agreed in the coming weeks and that it becomes official at the end of the season so as not to divert the focus from the action on the pitch.

Of course, Ceballos being handed a new deal seems like the right decision to make. Especially after how he has performed over the past several months.

He deserves immense credit for turning his Real Madrid career around. He has gone from a bench warmer to a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.
