Xabi Alonso breaks silence on Real Madrid return rumours
Xabi Alonso was a fantastic player and it looks like the Spaniard is setting himself up to be a world-class manager as well. He has not managed at the top level for even a full season yet, and he is already earning plaudits from all around the game. So much so that he has been linked with the Real Madrid job, as a possible replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
It is safe to say that Ancelotti has done a wonderful job since returning to the club. They won a double last season and are still in the running for another one this time around. Things can change very quickly at Santiago Bernabeu though.
Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid is up in the air. If Real Madrid go trophyless, then the Italian could be shown the exit door. On the other hand, he has been heavily linked with the Brazil national team job as well.
If Ancelotti does depart Real Madrid at the end of the season, they will need to find a suitable replacement. And Alonso is rumoured to be someone that the club have in their sights.
Alonso breaks silence on Real Madrid return rumours
Of course, Alonso’s performance at Bayer Leverkusen has caught the eye of other teams as well. Tottenham Hotspur are rumoured to be interested in the Spaniard too. What does he make of it all though?
As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Alonso said about the Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid links:
"“I’ve been in football for many years, rumours are normal but we still have a lot to achieve.”"
It looks like Alonso has his mind only on the job at hand at Bayer Leverkusen as he added:
"“That’s why my head is 100 percent here for the last few months. And my head is also 100 percent here for next season.”"
Alonso has done an incredible job at Bayer Leverkusen till now. When he arrived last October, it had looked like the club were set to be in a relegation struggle. He has guided them to sixth in the Bundesliga table from there, and they are also in the Europa League semi-finals.
