Liverpool and Real Madrid have been involved in quite a few contests on the pitch in recent years. Just this season, they met in the last 16 of the competition. But if rumours are to be believed, they were involved in a transfer race last summer as well, with Los Blancos coming out on top, as they have on the field on numerous occasions as well.

It was involving Aurelien Tchouameni. The Frenchman left AS Monaco to join Real Madrid in the summer for a transfer package that could rise up to €100 million with add-ons. But it is believed that Liverpool were very interested in signing him too.

Tchouameni has had an interesting first season at Real Madrid to say the least. He had started brilliantly and did not let the team feel the absence of Casemiro, who had left for Manchester United in the summer.

Things have not been going so smoothly in recent months though. Tchouameni is no longer a nailed on starter. In fact, he has been left out of the starting XI in most of the club’s recent games. Unsurprisingly, questions are already being raised about the Frenchman’s future.

It looks like Liverpool still hold an interest in Tchouameni, in the scenario that he becomes available. As reported by FootballFanCast, insider Graeme Bailey said while speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast:

"“I think Liverpool are just making it known to Real and to the player himself, you know, if you want to come to England, we’re here. We still like you, we still rate you. With Real, they don’t want to let them go. They know what a talent they’ve got.”"

It might be too early for Real Madrid to even consider letting Tchouameni go, even though he has not been at his best in recent months. There is no question about the Frenchman’s talent.

He is still very young as well, being just 23 years of age. It is no surprise that he has faced some struggles in his first season at Real Madrid. He should get the chance to play through them, and his recent struggles will make him a better player eventually.
