Real Madrid suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, to be knocked out from the UEFA Champions League. With their lack of depth and problems with injuries, reaching the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition was a commendable feat on the part of Los Blancos.

At the same time though, the manner of their defeat in the semis raises a lot of questions. Losing is fine, but not in this one-sided manner.

Manchester City won 4-0 in the second leg and 5-1 on aggregate. And the difference could have easily been much more, if not for the heroics of Thibaut Courtois in goal for Real Madrid.

Vinicius Jr, who has been one of the shining lights for Real Madrid in recent years, was clearly not happy with the result and recognised that it cannot be repeated. As reported by MARCA, the Brazilian winger said:

"“Today was a very difficult day for us but we have to take the lessons to learn from this game and that it does not happen again next season.”"

Vinicius himself was nowhere near his best in the second leg vs Manchester City. And truth be told, Kyle Walker pretty much dominated him for most of the game.

It is clear that there are a lot of areas that this team needs to improve in. At the same time though, one cannot overlook the obvious weaknesses in how this squad has been assembled and how far they are behind Manchester City in this respect. They must strengthen considerably in the summer.

It is great to see players like Vinicius recognising the standards at Real Madrid and not accepting this as just another loss. Once again, no team can win the Champions League year after year, and there is nothing wrong with being eliminated by a team as good as Manchester City. It is just unfortunate that Los Blancos were played off the park in the second leg.
