Real Madrid fans saw their side being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Manchester City. The elimination was not nearly as disappointing as the manner of it. Los Blancos were played off the park in the second leg, losing 4-0. And the scoreline could have been much worse, if not for the heroics of Thibaut Courtois in goal.
For the most part, the elimination should not have come as a major surprise. We have seen this side struggle throughout the course of the season.
They might have won the Copa del Rey, but did not even get close to competing with Barcelona for La Liga, dropping points left, right and centre. And away in Manchester, it became clear that they were not nearly as good as Pep Guardiola’s team right now.
The fact of the matter is, Real Madrid simply do not have the depth to compete with the best teams on the planet consistently right now. The good news is, there seems to be a great opportunity to strengthen this summer.
Real Madrid must sign Liverpool hero this summer
It is not often that world-class players become available as free agents. But as reported by Liverpool’s official website, Roberto Firmino will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
Firmino is a superb player and has been key to the success that Liverpool have enjoyed under the management of Jurgen Klopp in recent years. It is not just goalscoring that he brings to the table but the ability to improve those around him. He is one of the biggest reasons why the duo of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane was so prolific for the Reds.
Real Madrid could certainly do with more options up front. And there might not be a better player available in that regard this summer than Firmino.
