Real Madrid were unable to keep up with Barcelona in the La Liga title race this season. In fact, Carlo Ancelotti’s side might have a tough time even finishing second in the league, as Atletico Madrid have moved ahead of them in the table. So, while Los Blancos might have won the Copa del Rey this season, there is a clear need for reinforcements.
One area where they could do with more options is striker. Karim Benzema is 35 years of age and has been dealing with fitness issues throughout the season. Thus, the Frenchman needs some help.
That has seen them being linked with a move for Roberto Firmino. After a legendary run at Liverpool, the Brazilian will depart Anfield in the summer and is set to be available as a free agent.
Real Madrid have been very active when it comes to scooping up proven free agents in recent years. Both Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba arrived at Santiago Bernabeu in similar deals. When it comes to Firmino, they have competition though.
Barcelona closer to signing Real Madrid transfer target
As reported by Fichajes, Firmino is getting closer to Barcelona. For the Brazilian, the role of understudy at Camp Nou would not be a problem.
Firmino is a superb talent without doubt. He has the ability to get the best out of those around him, as he was able to do with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at Liverpool. Signing him, especially as a free agent, would have to be considered as a major coup for Real Madrid.
But it looks like a move to Barcelona is much more likely at this point. If the move did happen, Firmino would be expected to play second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski at Camp Nou. Let’s see what the future holds.
