Real Madrid are heading towards a very important summer transfer window. The club need to add to their options, as they lack in depth at the moment and have struggled to compete with Europe’s elite this season or on a consistent basis altogether. On the other hand though, there are some who could be heading in the opposite direction.

There are a number of players whose current deals are set to run out in the summer. One of them is Marco Asensio.

For a long time, there was hope that Asensio would end up extending his stay at Real Madrid. But recent rumours have suggested that the Spaniard has decided to leave as a free agent at the end of the campaign.

And as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa submitted an opening bid to Asensio last week. Negotiations have been ongoing for days.

At the start of the current season, Asensio was struggling to get into the team and was not even getting minutes off the bench. But the Spaniard’s role in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans has certainly grown over the course of the campaign.

He has proven himself to be a brilliant impact substitute and has had an effect on games when starting as well. To be honest, he has been one of Real Madrid’s most reliable source of goals lately and has enjoyed arguably his best individual campaign at the club.

Thus, all things considered, Asensio leaving the club as a free agent would be a blow to Real Madrid. While he might not have been a starter, he has been an important part of the team without doubt and the club will have a tough time finding someone to replace him, who can play that role so well.
