Real Madrid’s current squad is severely lacking in depth. That was already the case last season, and now the likes of Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard and Mariano Diaz have headed out as well. Thus, Los Blancos cannot afford to lose any more players. At the same time though, we have seen quite a few surprise exits in recent years.

It was just last summer that Casemiro left out of the blue to join Manchester United. Could another midfielder do the same this summer?

Federico Valverde is someone who has improved tremendously this season. He was always a solid player and now, he has added goals to his game as well. That seems to be drawing interest in his signature from Europe’s elite.

As reported by Defensa Central (via The Hard Tackle), Chelsea are looking to sign Valverde ahead of next season. Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the 24-year-old Uruguayan midfielder.

Valverde has the potential to be one of the best midfielders of his generation. He was almost unplayable for a few months early on in the 2022/23 campaign and was scoring for fun.

His form in front of goal did take somewhat of a dip as the season progressed. But overall, he remained a nailed on starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side and ended up having the best campaign of his career so far.

At 24 years of age, Valverde is just starting to head towards his prime and still has plenty of room for development. Thus, it would be way too early to let him go. The Uruguayan has to be a big part of the club’s plans moving forward, even though they are set to sign Jude Bellingham this summer. Let’s see what the future holds but it would be a surprise if the South American midfielder ends up at Chelsea any time soon.
