Real Madrid need to add to their options up front this summer. Following Karim Benzema’s departure, the club are without a first-choice number 9 right now. On top of that, they do not have cover either, as Mariano Diaz won’t be at Santiago Bernabeu come next season either. Alvaro is the only recognised centre-forward in the squad. But at 18 years of age, he is not ready to lead the line for Los Blancos and it might be too early to even count on him as cover.

Thus, Real Madrid could do with a couple of strikers in this summer transfer window. And it does look like they are closing in on one already.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are completing the final details in order to get the Joselu deal done and sealed next week. Personal terms have already been agreed since 10 days. The expectation is to get the agreement signed at the beginning of next week.

One would not expect Joselu to be the main man up top for Real Madrid. But he can certainly provide excellent cover in the position.

Joselu has already had a stint at Real Madrid but was unable to make his mark in the senior team back then, spending most of his time playing at the Castilla level instead. Since then, he has grown into one of the best strikers in Spanish football though.

Espanyol got relegated last season but that did not stop Joselu from impressing. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 17 goals and provided 4 assists in 38 appearances in the 2022/23 campaign.

Thus, signing Joselu could be a smart move on the part of Real Madrid and he is expected to be an upgrade on Mariano. The club still need to sign a world-class striker to replace Benzema though.
