Newcastle United have already made tremendous progress since their change in ownership, and will be playing Champions League football next season. As a result, the Magpies are expected to bring in players to compete at that level as well. And it appears that a Real Madrid midfielder has caught their sights.

It has been rare for Real Madrid to make blockbuster moves in recent years. They did make one last summer though, to bring in Aurelien Tchouameni from AS Monaco.

It goes without saying that expectations were high and the Frenchman was being viewed by many as a stalwart in the middle of the park for the next decade to come. With Casemiro leaving, a starting spot opened up as well.

Tchouameni made a bright start to life in the Royal White jersey as well and many people were viewing his signing as a masterstroke on the part of the club. As the season progressed, his form faded away though, especially after the World Cup. It is worth pointing out that he missed a penalty in the final against Argentina. And now, there are some doubts over his long-term future at Real Madrid.

As reported by Defensa Central (via Caught Offside), Newcastle United have offered Real Madrid £68.5 million (€80 million) to sign Tchouameni.

There have been conflicting rumours about Real Madrid’s stance on Tchouameni. Some have claimed that they are ready to back the Frenchman and give him time to play his way back into form, as he remains a part of their long-term plans. Others have suggested that the club would be willing to let him go, if the right offer arrived.

Thus, it remains to be seen if the Frenchman remains a Real Madrid player come next season. Of course, the arrival of Jude Bellingham has increased competition in the middle of the park as well.
