Kylian Mbappe has been considered the next superstar in football for a long time and yet, he has not been able to ascend to that throne quite yet. His World Cup victory came while he was still a teenager. And he has failed to deliver a Champions League for PSG. Rumours of a move to Real Madrid have followed him for years, but it has not materialised till now.

Mbappe has already made it clear though that he will not be signing a contract extension with PSG beyond the summer of 2024. And that could open the door to Real Madrid for him, either this summer in a blockbuster move or next year as a free agent.

Moving to Real Madrid might be the last step in Mbappe’s journey to true footballing megastardom. Of course, nothing should be taken for granted until we see him holding up that Royal White jersey. It seems destined to happen though.

In that respect, some of Mbappe’s recent Ballon d’Or comments are interesting. As reported by the Mirror, the Frenchman said:

"“It’s difficult to talk about an individual trophy because you have to put yourself forward and it’s not well seen by the general public.“What are the new criteria? Is it to shine and make an impact? I think I fit the criteria. We’ll see. It’s the people who vote but I’m still optimistic.”"

Mbappe has had a great individual season without doubt, for both club and country. It is hard to see him winning the Ballon d’Or this time around though.

It will either go to Lionel Messi for the eighth time, after inspiring Argentina to their first World Cup since 1986. Or Erling Haaland, who won the Treble and scored 52 goals in his debut campaign with Manchester City.

It is quite clear that Mbappe has Ballon d’Or ambitions though and there is no better to achieve that than at Real Madrid. The club have produced three different winners just over the past decade in Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema, and a record eight over their storied history.
