Gerard Pique is a player who Real Madrid fans were not too fond of during his playing days. He spent the majority of his career at FC Barcelona, and was a graduate of La Masia as well. And the Spaniard was someone who was at the centre of the rivalry between the two clubs, when El Clasico was at its peak in the late 2000s and the 2010s.

Pique decided to call time on his career in the middle of last season. That was unique in itself, as players with his legacy often wait for the campaign to conclude.

Since his retirement, Pique has had an interesting career path as well. He is the President of the Kings League, an unique 7-a-side format of football that has enjoyed incredible success online and featured huge names.

Yet, it is quite clear that Pique still enjoys stirring the pot from time to time. As reported by Tribuna, the Barcelona legend said in an interview with Cadena SER:

"“Now that I’m retired, I still hope that Real Madrid will always lose.“I have always understood the rivalry even when I was still active as a player. That’s how I lived it and that’s how I transmitted it.”"

After a few difficult years, Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga last season. While Real Madrid might have failed to defend their league title, Los Blancos did win the Copa del Rey, a competition in which they had not been at their best in recent years. They got the better of the Catalan giants in the semis as well, which would have made their triumph even sweeter.

Overall, there is not a world of difference between the two teams at this point of time. Thus, fans should expect a tight title race next season.

Real Madrid have lost key players like Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio. But they have also brought in Jude Bellingham, Fran Garcia, Arda Guler and Joselu this summer. And a move for Kylian Mbappe has not been ruled out either.
