Chelsea have been heavily focussed on parting ways with players this summer. They have let go of key stars like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and several others. Sooner or later, they will need to make some additions though, if they are to even challenge for a top 6 spot in the Premier League in the upcoming season. And it looks like they have a long-time Real Madrid target in their sights.

Last season, there were complaints that Chelsea had too big of a squad. This time around, they might have the opposite problem though. They might have let too many players leave.

One area which could pose a particular problem is their midfield. Mount, Kante, Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all left this summer while Conor Gallagher is being linked with an exit as well. Jorginho signed for Arsenal in January.

At this moment, Enzo Fernandez is the only midfielder in the squad, who can be considered as a regular starter. Mohammed Kudus is someone who seems to be inching towards a move to Stamford Bridge though.

As reported by Football Insider, Chelsea are close to agreeing personal terms with Kudus as the Blues put the finishing touches to what would be a major signing for them. The transfer fee is believed to have been settled at £40 million and the Ghana international is keen to sign for the Premier League giants.

Kudus currently plays for Ajax and is considered as one of the brightest talents in Europe right now. He is coming off of the best season of his career. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 18 goals and provided 7 assists in 42 appearances in the 2022/23 campaign.

Kudus’ versatility is an asset as well. He can play as a central midfielder, a number 10, a centre forward and even on the right flank.
