Real Madrid and Manchester United are no strangers to each other. In the first decade of this century, Los Blancos had made a habit of signing some of the best players from the Premier League giants. David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo, all made the switch from Old Trafford to Santiago Bernabeu.

That trend has changed since then though. These days, it is Manchester United who often end up signing players from Real Madrid.

Raphael Varane made the move to Manchester United in 2021 and Casemiro joined them in 2022. Now, it looks like the Red Devils are aiming to sign a key player from Real Madrid for the third straight summer.

As reported by Todofichajes, Manchester United are willing to pay a fixed €50 million transfer fee for David Alaba in addition to another figure still to be negotiated in variables. Erik ten Hag considers the Austrian defender a key piece for his new plans and the board of directors have been advancing with the operation for weeks. The only doubts right now are in the player, that he is not sure if the change is a good idea.

Alaba arrived at Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer of 2021 after his contract with Bayern Munich ran out. Since then, he has been a starter for the club and won six trophies with them.

Thus, Alaba leaving would be a blow for Carlo Ancelotti’s team. They will certainly need to find a suitable replacement for him. The other centre-backs in the team are Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho. The Austrian has also served as cover at left-back.

At the same time, it is not hard to see why Real Madrid might be interested. They would receive a significant transfer fee for a 31-year-old defender they signed as a free agent.
