One issue that Real Madrid face right now, and have done for some time, is their lack of squad depth. Despite that, there are a number of players at the club whose futures are in doubt. Thibaut Courtois is the nailed on starter between the posts and arguably the best goalkeeper in the world at this point of time. That has raised doubts about the place of Andriy Lunin at the club though.

Lunin was signed by Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 and he has been extremely highly-rated for a long time. He has not played much first-team football for the club though.

Most of Lunin’s appearances have come when Courtois has been unavailable for selection. And recently, his performance levels have dipped as well, as there are doubts over the goalkeeper’s future at Santiago Bernabeu.

As reported by AS, at Real Madrid they told Lunin that his best option was to leave the club and look for minutes in another team to rediscover his form. But the player does not want to know anything about a potential transfer. He has a contract for a year and his plan is to fulfil it.

Real Madrid were linked with quite a few goalkeepers in recent times. But it looks like Lunin not leaving has become a hurdle in bringing another player in to play between the posts and as the cover to Courtois.

Lunin’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2024. Perhaps becoming a free agent would open up more opportunities for him than leaving in the ongoing transfer window.

Let’s see what the future holds for Lunin at Real Madrid. He did play the pre-season friendly against AC Milan but failed to convince with his performance that he is back to his best.
