Real Madrid appeared to have pulled off a masterstroke by signing Arda Guler from Fenerbahce for a transfer fee around €20 million this summer. The early impressions of the youngster seemed to be extremely positive. The 18-year-old was rumoured to have impresssed the coaching team and his teammates in training and was already being viewed by some as a future superstar.

Unfortunately though, things have taken an unexpected turn for Guler since then. The Turkish wonderkid has suffered a knee injury before even making his debut for Real Madrid.

Initially, it was hoped that it was not a serious matter. But now, it looks like surgery is a real possibility for Guler.

As reported by The Athletic, Guler has suffered an injury to the internal meniscus of his right knee. The summer signing will undergo a platelet-rich plasma injection and if this is not successful then the youngster will require surgery.

Undergoing surgery could send Guler to the sidelines for a considerable length of time. As reported by Mundo Deportivo, if they ultimately opted for the operation, it would mean five months off for the youngster.

That is bad news for Real Madrid without doubt. There was a lot of excitement around Guler. But the youngster has suffered a blow before he could even make an appearance in pre-season.

Fans will be hoping that Guler does not need to undergo surgey and recovers as soon as possible. It remains to be seen how things play out though.

Injuries have been a major problem for Real Madrid in recent seasons. And they have not been helped by the fact that they lack options in several positions across the pitch. Guler, for example, was expected to get senior minutes from the get go.
