Real Madrid have a habit of signing some of the best young talents from around the world. The likes of Vinicius Jr, Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo have developed into starters during their time at Santiago Bernabeu. This summer, they have brought in Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler, who are believed to be destined for big things in the Spanish capital.
Of course, the club are not going to be successful in signing every top talent that they are linked with. Josko Gvardiol’s name is set to go under that category.
Real Madrid had been heavily linked with Gvardiol on numerous occasions in the past. Especially after his spectacular performances at the 2022 World Cup. The Croatian was arguably the best defender at the tournament.
Thus, someone like Gvardiol could have been a great signing for Real Madrid. But, it looks like he is set to join Manchester City instead.
Manchester City agree €90 million deal for Real Madrid target
As reported by The Athletic, Manchester City have agreed a €90 million deal with RB Leipzig for Gvardiol. He is set to undergo a medical later this week.
Gvardiol is considered the best young centre-back in world football by many. Thus, Manchester City signing him is a blow for clubs like Real Madrid. Not only are Los Blancos losing out on a supreme talent but he is joining a direct Champions League rival as well.
Real Madrid’s defence has looked in the ongoing pre-season as well. They were able to keep a clean sheet against Manchester United. But they conceded three goals each to Barcelona and Juventus. AC Milan scored twice past them.
Real Madrid’s centre-back options right now are Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez. Three out of the four are past 30 years of age and someone like Gvardiol could have been an excellent addition to this squad. But it was not to be.
