Even the biggest Real Madrid fan would admit that there are holes in this current squad. Of course, the club have a lot of quality players in their ranks and perhaps the best midfield department in all of Europe. But at the same time, one cannot ignore the obvious lack of depth in certain positions across the pitch.

Real Madrid’s biggest area of need right now is a striker. Karim Benzema brought an end to his legendary run at Santiago Bernabeu at the end of last season in order to join Al-Ittihad. Not only was he the biggest source of goals for Carlo Ancelotti’s team but the face of the club as well.

Real Madrid have not gone out and signed a world-class striker to replace Benzema though. Instead, it looks like they are involved in the Mbappe transfer saga once again this summer.

As reported by SPORT, Ancelotti is very unhappy with Real Madrid’s planning for this season. One week before the start of the league campaign, at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao, the Italian is without the number 9 that he asked for when Benzema announced his decision not to renew and leave for Al-Ittihad. The manager had put the signing of Harry Kane on the table, even ahead of Mbappe.

It is actually a surprise that Real Madrid have never made a strong push to sign Kane this summer despite the early rumours. Right now, Bayern Munich seem like his most likely destination.

Real Madrid have signed a new striker this summer, with Joselu being brought in on a season-long loan deal from Espanyol. But that just does not feel enough to replace Benzema.

Let’s see how things turn out in the Mbappe transfer saga. If he does not end up at Santiago Bernabeu this summer, would the club go after alternative targets to fill in at striker?
