Real Madrid have suffered an absolutely massive blow just days before the start of their 2023/24 season. Thibaut Courtois, unfortunately, suffered a torn ACL in training and could end up missing the entirety of the season. This sort of injury usually takes six to nine months to heal and it could take athletes longer to get cleared to compete. One also has to take into account that the Belgian is 31 years of age.

In the wake of Courtois’ injury, Real Madrid must now assess their options at goalkeeper. They now have to decide between signing a goalkeeper to replace the Belgian for the season or relying on Andriy Lunin to be the number one.

Lunin is a very highly-rated goalkeeper in his own right. But it feels more likely that Real Madrid would go for the first option.

It looks like the club might have a preferred choice already. As tweeted out by Kerry Hau, Real Madrid are currently leaning towards David de Gea.

Real Madrid interested in Manchester United legend

De Gea is a name that has been long linked with Real Madrid. The Spanish goalkeeper had a failed move to Santiago Bernabeu back in 2015 due to paperwork not being submitted on time.

De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011. After a difficult start to life in England, he found his feet and established himself as a legend at Old Trafford, spending over a decade there.

The 32-year-old Spaniard is coming off of a somewhat up-and-down season with Manchester United. He won the Premier League Golden Glove but also made some high-profile mistakes.

De Gea’s contract at Manchester United expired this summer. Thus, the Spanish goalkeeper is available as a free agent. And that might be the most important thing for Real Madrid, as they need to bring someone in as quickly as possible.
