Real Madrid find themselves in a very difficult position right now. One of their most important players, Thibaut Courtois, has torn his ACL before the campaign even started. There is a big possibility that the Belgian could miss the entire season as a result of it. And the club need to find a replacement for him.
One would not expect Real Madrid to go out and make a splash in the transfer market. As a result, signing a free agent might make a lot of sense.
And there is a very good one available right now in the form of David de Gea. The Manchester United legend left Old Trafford this summer after his contract ran out and now, it looks like a move to Santiago Bernabeu is a real possibility.
As reported by talkSPORT, De Gea is in advanced talks with Real Madrid. The Spaniard is now on the brink of signing for Los Blancos on a free transfer.
Manchester United hero in advanced talks to join Real Madrid
On paper, signing De Gea makes a lot of sense for Real Madrid. He is a very experienced goalkeeper available as a free agent. And despite question marks over him in recent years, the Spaniard did win the Premier League Golden Glove last season.
At the same time, Real Madrid have past history with De Gea as well. They had agreed to sign him back in the summer of 2015 but the deal collapsed due to paperwork not being submitted on time.
Ultimately, things turned out well for Real Madrid. Keylor Navas proved to be an exceptional goalkeeper and helped the club win three straight Champions League titles. And Courtois is arguably the best in the world right now. Bringing in De Gea would right that wrong from the past though, albeit a decade later.
