Real Madrid made a winning start to their La Liga season with a 2-0 win away at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao. Jude Bellingham scored on his competitive debut for Los Blancos while Rodrygo found the back of the net as well. And Carlo Ancelotti’s side dominated in all departments on the night.

The one negative coming out of the game against Athletic Bilbao was the injury suffered by Eder Militao. The Brazilian was forced off the pitch early in the second half and replaced by Antonio Rudiger.

It looked like Militao got his studs caught in the pitch and unfortunately ended up injuring his knee. Things certainly did not look good in the aftermath and Carlo Ancelotti has given an update on the Brazilian after the game.

As tweeted out by Madrid Xtra, Ancelotti said about Militao’s situation:

"“He has suffered a sprained knee. It doesn’t look good.”"

Real Madrid will be hoping that this is nothing serious and Militao is back available soon. The club were already handed a hammer blow earlier in the week when Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL. The Belgian goalkeeper might not feature this season at all as a result.

If it turns out to be a serious injury for Militao though, Real Madrid must consider dipping into the transfer market to bring in a replacement, even a short-term one. Otherwise, options might be short.

In the absence of Militao, one would expect David Alaba and Rudiger to start. Nacho Fernandez can act as cover and even get starts himself if he impresses. Other than that, Los Blancos do not have another centre-back. Jesus Vallejo and Rafa Marin have both left on loan this summer already.

Let’s see how serious Militao’s injury turns out to be. Right now, we can only wish him the best of luck and hope for a speedy recovery.
