Just days ago, Real Madrid lost Thibaut Courtois for potentially the entire season after the Belgian tore his ACL. Now, Los Blancos have been handed another major setback. Eder Militao was forced off the pitch in the very first game of the campaign, against Athletic Bilbao away at San Mames, and since then, it has been confirmed that he has suffered a similar injury and will undergo surgery.

That leaves Real Madrid without arguably their best defender for potentially the whole of the 2023/24 campaign. The fans cannot be blamed for feeling that this season is already setting up for failure.

Real Madrid have moved quickly to bring in a replacement for Courtois. It is believed that they will sign Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea for the season.

Will they go out and do the same for Militao? Well, for the time being, it looks like they might stick to their options.

Real Madrid transfer plans after Militao’s injury

As reported by AS, Militao will be out for about nine months. In principle, the club is not expected to make any move, since Carlo Ancelotti has David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho to cover the centre-back positions and could turn to Castilla in case of an emergency.

Militao was a very important part of this team. Moving forward, one would expect Rudiger and Alaba to be the centre-back duo with Nacho providing cover. Jesus Vallejo left on loan earlier this summer.

There does not seem to be much depth in that area of the pitch though. All three are past 30 years of age as well. That is something that one has to consider as well.

Ideally, Real Madrid would bring in a centre-back to take Militao’s place in the squad. Even if on a season-long loan deal, like they are set to do with Kepa.
