Just days after Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL, Eder Militao did the same. The incident took place in Real Madrid’s La Liga season opener against Athletic Bilbao away at San Mames. The Brazilian centre-back was forced off the pitch early in the second half and since then, it has emerged that he could potentially be out for the rest of the campaign.

That is not ideal for Real Madrid. Militao is arguably the best centre-back the club have. In his absence, Carlo Ancelotti’s other three options at centre-back are Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez.

All three of them are in their 30s. At the same time, an injury to any of the three would spell trouble for Real Madrid, who are paper thin when it comes to depth at centre-back.

Many fans would have been hoping for Real Madrid to sign a new centre-back to replace Militao, even if on a season-long loan like they did with Kepa Arrizabalaga. But it looks like Los Blancos have chosen to look within the club instead.

Real Madrid have decided Militao’s replacement

As reported by AS, Real Madrid have decided on the plan to deal with Militao’s long-term absence. They have permanently promoted Marvel. The 20-year-old has been training these days with the first-team and has convinced Ancelotti. Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal are being viewed as emergency options there as well.

Marvel has come through the youth ranks of the club. He is 20 years of age now but is yet to make his debut for the senior team. This could be his big chance to show what he is capable of at the senior level.

At the same time, one has to feel that Rafa Marin’s loan move has come at the worst possible time for him. He most probably would have been the one to be promoted if he was at Santiago Bernabeu right now.
