Real Madrid are no strangers to swooping in to sign players ahead of their rival clubs, including Barcelona. Just this summer, Los Blancos were able to sign Arda Guler just when it had looked like the Catalan giants were on the verge of winning the race for his signature. Last year, it was the same case with Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, who is set to arrive in the Spanish capital in 2024.
One player Real Madrid fans might not know was on the verge of signing for Barcelona is Rodrygo. The Brazilian was one step away from joining but Los Blancos were able to secure his signature for a transfer package of around €45 million.
That has proven to be a bargain in the long run. Rodrygo is already a starter for Real Madrid and still has so much untapped potential.
Now, Rodrygo has shed some light on how he joined Real Madrid even though a move to Barcelona was on the table as well. And it will certainly please the club’s supporters.
Real Madrid fans will be happy with Rodrygo’s Barcelona comments
As reported by ge.globo, Rodrygo said about his experience:
"“Practically everything was right with Barcelona, we just needed to sign, and I asked my father: “Nothing from Real Madrid?”. Proposals came from all the teams and nothing from Real. Then, I asked to wait for the weekend because we would have a game with Vitória.”"
Ultimately, the offer from Real Madrid did come as well and it appeared to be a simple decision for Rodrgyo. He went on to add:
"“I went to the game with Vitória, I scored three goals, I gave an assist, we won 5-2, and during the game Real Madrid called my father and he didn’t even have to make the proposal. They just asked if I wanted to go, and my dad already knew my answer. The next day, I was off, playing video games, I was with my mother and my father left in the morning without saying anything. At the end of the afternoon, he arrived in Santos, went into the house, passed me and my mother at the table without speaking to anyone. He went straight to my room and had a Real Madrid and Barcelona shirt on. As everything was right, he had already traveled to visit Barcelona’s facilities and brought it, from Real I already had it.“He took both shirts, threw them on top of me and said, “Now, you choose.” I didn’t understand, but I didn’t even think about it, it was Real Madrid.”"
Since his arrival in 2019, Rodrygo has slowly climbed through the ranks to become one of the cornerstones of this Real Madrid team. He has gotten off to a great start this season, scoring the first goal of the new campaign. At only 22 years of age, the youngster has so much more potential to be unlocked and if he can do that, he will be one of the club’s most important players for years to come. Right now, it is about establishing himself as a nailed-on starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
