Real Madrid find themselves in a difficult situation right now, owing to injuries. Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao have suffered torn ACLs recently. Thus, it is very possible that one or both of them could be out for the entire 2023/24 season. That is a big problem for Los Blancos. And while they have brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan to cover for the injured Belgian between the posts, the club are yet to bring in a centre-back.

It remains to be seen whether that will change over the coming days or not. There have been suggestions that the club could go ahead with Marvel as the fourth centre-back. The 20-year-old has not even made his debut for the senior team yet.

Ideally, Real Madrid would sign another centre-back this summer to fill the void of Militao. And one player they are being linked with is Aymeric Laporte of Manchester City.

The Spaniard is expected to leave Manchester City this summer. He had already slipped down the pecking order and the club have recently brought in Josko Gvardiol. Despite his availability, Real Madrid should not sign him though.

On paper, signing Laporte might make a lot of sense. On top of his game, the Spaniard is a great defender, has top-level experience and is well-accustomed to La Liga as a result of having played for Athletic Bilbao.

Yet, his major problem has been injuries. Laporte has been dealing with one injury after another throughout the course of his career. And at 29 years of age, things are not expected to get any better in that regard.

On the other hand, Real Madrid already have their fair share of injury problems. They do not need another player who has fitness issues.

If Laporte did not have an extensive injury history, signing him would have been a bit of a no-brainer. But as things stand, it is a move that Real Madrid should stay away from despite the Spaniard’s undeniable qualities.
