Real Madrid look very different this season than the last one. The departure of Karim Benzema and the arrival of Jude Bellingham has led Carlo Ancelotti to change his system. The club are now playing a 4-4-2 instead of a 4-3-3. They have a diamond in the middle of the park, with Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo playing as a duo up top.

Of course, this change in system has benefited a few while some others might have been much more suited to the old formation. Luka Modric appears to fall under the latter category.

Modric appears to have dropped out of the starting XI this season. The Croatian has been used as a substitute in both league games till now. The likes of Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kroos appear to be ahead of him in the pecking order as things stand.

Of course, it is an unfamiliar position for Modric to be in. He has been a stalwart in the Real Madrid team for over a decade. But he will turn 38 next month and it is natural for him to not play as much moving forward.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Ancelotti said about Modric’s situation:

"“He’s not happy he’s not playing, it’s very strange to see Luka not playing but he’ll have minutes. For sure. He will help us during the season.”"

Let’s see how things turn out for Modric this season and how he adjusts to his new role. Many believe that this could be his last year at Real Madrid and if that is the case then the Croatian will surely want to make it a successful one.

Real Madrid’s biggest weakness at the moment is their lack of depth. That does not really apply to their midfield though, which might be the best in all of Europe. But with a long season ahead, one would expect Modric to get his fair share of chances. His experience and ability to perform in big games could still be invaluable to this young team.
