Real Madrid have made some huge signings from the Premier League over the years. A lot of them have worked out brilliantly, like when they broke the transfer record in order to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009. The Portuguese superstar went on to become arguably the best player in the club’s history. On the other hand, their signing of Eden Hazard went in the opposite.
For years, Real Madrid had been linked with a move for Hazard, as he continued to sparkle in England. After establishing himself as a Chelsea legend and one of the best in Premier League history over his seven years at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian would finally join Los Blancos in 2019 for a transfer fee north of £100 million.
It looked like a move that could not fail. One of the best players in the world arriving at Real Madrid in the prime of his career. What could go wrong? Well, almost everything did.
Hazard never found his footing after arriving at Real Madrid, as a result of suffering one injury after another. After scoring just seven goals over his four seasons at Santiago Bernabeu, the Belgian would leave the club and become a free agent at the end of last season, a year before his contract was set to run out.
32-year-old wants to retire after leaving Real Madrid
Hazard is yet to join a club, even though he has been linked with many over the summer. What does the future hold for him?
As reported by Foot Mercato (via Get French Football News), Hazard has had several clubs trailing him this summer. But nobody has managed to convince him to sign with them till now. The Belgian icon’s intention is to stop everything and retire. This is despite the fact that those around him are advising him to continue.
If this is how Hazard’s career comes to an end, it would be sad. Despite his struggles at Real Madrid, the Belgian is one of the best players of his generation and one of the most talented ever.
