Manchester United have a history of signing Real Madrid players. In 2014, they signed Angel Di Maria, a move that did not quite work out and the Argentine departed soon afterwards. In the summer of 2021, they got a deal done for Raphael Varane and in the following one, Casemiro joined the Red Devils almost out of the blue.
It looks like Manchester United had their eyes on another Real Madrid legend this summer. But on this occasion, he was no longer at Santiago Bernabeu.
Sergio Ramos recently completed a return to Sevilla. He had come through the youth ranks at the club and gotten his first taste of senior football there before joining Real Madrid in 2005. It looks like he had the chance to join Manchester United as well.
As reported by The Sun, Ramos rejected a last-ditch transfer offer from Manchester United before sealing his return to Sevilla. It was immediately declined by the Spaniard and the Red Devils were said to be unhappy with the swiftness.
Real Madrid legend rejected late offer from Manchester United
Manchester United have had a tough start to the season. They are 11th in the Premier League table, having picked up six points from their first four games, losing to both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, and not really convincing in the two matches they won either.
Raphael Varane is currently out injured right now. Thus, it looks like Manchester United were looking towards his former defensive partner at Real Madrid to add some experience to their backline.
Ramos is still very capable of playing at the top level. He was a starter for PSG just last season before leaving at the end of the campaign after his contract ran out. The Real Madrid centre-back has chosen to return to Spain, even though several other offers were also on the table.
