When Eder Militao tore his ACL in the very first match of the season, against Athletic Bilbao, many fans were hoping for Real Madrid to sign another centre-back to take his place in the squad. There was speculation about signing someone like Aymeric Laporte on a permanent or bringing in a player on loan for the season as they did with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Real Madrid did neither. Instead, Los Blancos have chosen to stick with the options they have in the heart of defence.

Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Nacho are all experienced and proven centre-backs that Carlo Ancelotti can rely upon. And there have been suggestions that Castilla standout, Marvel, is being viewed as the fourth option in the position.

As reported by The Athletic, Marvel is set to extend his contract with the club until 2026. As of now, only the last details are missing to close the deal.

It does feel like the spot would have gone to Rafa Marin, if he had not headed out on loan this summer. He is currently at Alaves and is getting solid game time. It is a good chance for Marvel to show what he is capable of. He is clearly very highly rated at the Castilla level. But can he perform in the senior team?

Only time shall tell. As things stand, Marvel has not even made his debut for Real Madrid yet. But one would expect that to come in the Copa del Rey or perhaps as a late substitute in La Liga at some point in the future.

Defence has not been a particular area of strength for Real Madrid in recent times. And with arguably their best defender in Militao out injured for the foreseeable future, they could be in for a long season.
