Real Madrid have been unsuccessfully chasing the signature of Kylian Mbappe for a long, long time. Even this summer, it looked like the Frenchman joining Los Blancos was a real possibility. And yet, as the window drew to a close, he remained at PSG amidst suggestions that his signing a contract extension with the Ligue 1 giants was not out of the realms of possibility anymore.
Of course, no contract extension has been signed yet. Unless that changes, Mbappe is set to become a free agent next summer.
In that scenario, Santiago Bernabeu looks like his most likely destination. But Real Madrid must have backup plans as well because if there is one thing we have learned over the course of this long-running Mbappe saga, it is that nothing is ever certain.
Fortunately, it appears that that is exactly what Real Madrid are doing. And they have already picked out their alternative if a move for Mbappe does not work out.
Real Madrid make Haaland decision amid Mbappe chase
Of course, Haaland would be a spectacular signing for Real Madrid, especially at this point of time. They do not have a world-class striker in the squad and need a long-term successor to Karim Benzema, who left at the end of last season.
When it comes to goalscorers, there is no one better today than Haaland. He scored 52 goals in the previous campaign as Manchester City won the treble, in the Norwegian’s very first season with the club. Many Real Madrid fans believe that he would be a better signing than Mbappe. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Los Blancos and their transfer plans.
