Real Madrid signed a left-back this summer in the form of Fran Garcia. He came through the youth ranks of the club but was allowed to leave. He proved himself at Rayo Vallecano though and Los Blancos have never been shy when it comes to bringing back players if they prove themselves elsewhere.

Garcia has been the starter at left-back this season till now. It remains to be seen if he can keep his place in the starting XI when Ferland Mendy is back available.

Also, Real Madrid are expected to sign another left-back next summer. And the name they have been most heavily linked with is Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich.

Davies has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for quite a few years now. He is yet to sign a contract extension with Bayern Munich, with his current deal running out in the summer of 2025. Things don’t always go according to plan though. So Los Blancos need to have alternative targets as well.

Real Madrid eye Chelsea player as Davies alternative

As reported by Fichajes, given the uncertainty about Davies’ arrival, Real Madrid have an alternative in mind. It is Ian Maatsen of Chelsea.

That is certainly a name that most Real Madrid fans would not have expected the club to be linked with. Maatsen showed sparks of brilliance in pre-season but the fact of the matter is that he is not a starter for Chelsea.

In fact, they seem to be willing to play Levi Colwill at left-back and Ben Chilwill ahead of him on the wing, while Maatsen is mostly used as a substitute. That is not a great sign.

Maatsen is very talented without a doubt and can play in multiple positions as well. But at 21, he has played most of his football in the English second division.
