Real Madrid have made a superb start to this campaign but it remains to be seen if they are able to keep this up. Carlo Ancelotti’s side had been brilliant in the first few months of last season as well but faded away badly after that, finishing convincingly second in the league behind Barcelona and were knocked out from the Champions League by Manchester City in a one-sided contest. They did manage to win the Copa del Rey.

The same issues with squad depth still remain this season. In fact, it could actually be worse when you consider key players like Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio have left while Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois are out for the foreseeable future with ACL injuries.

Sooner or later, Real Madrid will need to make more signings. And one area where they need to strengthen soon is right-back.

Dani Carvajal is a club legend. But his performance levels have dipped in recent years, and he might not be a starter for Real Madrid much longer. On the other hand, Los Blancos do not have any long-term successor to the Spaniard either.

Real Madrid prepare €40 million offer for Chelsea player

As reported by Fichajes, Real Madrid continues to think about Reece James, as a potential replacement for Carvajal. They are already preparing an offer with a view to next summer that would be around €40 million.

Someone like James could be a spectacular signing for Real Madrid. But they have to take into consideration his terrible injury record over the past few years, as he has struggled to remain fit for any considerable length of time.

Also, it is hard to imagine that Chelsea would let their club captain go for a transfer fee around €40 million. He signed a long-term contract with them not too long ago.
