Real Madrid’s injury woes this season started since day one, when summer signing Arda Guler got injured during pre-season and after that first-team players like Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao picked up ACL injuries which will see them miss the majority of the campaign. Recently Vinicius Junior also picked up an issue and is expected to remain on the sidelines for a while.

Ferland Mendy and Dani Ceballos also picked up injuries which has seen them being sidelined up until now. The duo are closing in on their returns though.

Ceballos is back and has been included in the squad to take on Real Sociedad this weekend. On the other hand, Mendy is not quite ready but is expected to be fit to feature against Union Berlin in midweek in the Champions League opener.

This brings a new challenge for Carlo Ancelotti as the players returning to the squad would expect to feature in the upcoming matches. Someone or the other will have to sit out.

The return of Mendy would mean competition for Fran Garcia who has otherwise performed well but in the last game against Getafe, he did not look good and was taken off by Ancelotti at half-time, Nacho replaced him.

Real Madrid’s midfield is one area this season where there is no shortage of talent. Even the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are struggling to get in the starting XI as youngsters like Jude Bellingham, Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchoumeni and Eduardo Camavinga keep on dazzling every time they get an opportunity.

With Ceballos coming back into the squad, it will be interesting to see how much playing time he is afforded. Players returning from injuries is definitely a positive sign as Real Madrid will have to play six matches within a span of 16 days, where squad depth would be most crucial.
