Barcelona and Real Madrid look set to be the two teams to compete for the La Liga title once again. Both teams have made very good starts to the campaign. Los Blancos have been pretty much flawless, winning all five of their league games till now. On the other hand, Xavi’s side have won five and drawn one of their six.
Barcelona appear to have been handed a major injury blow though. And it could have long-term implications for them.
As reported by SPORT, Frenkie de Jong had to be substituted in the first half of the Barcelona vs Celta Vigo game after injuring his ankle. Everything seems to indicate that the midfielder will be out until well into the month of November.
Initially, it was not thought to be a very serious matter. But since then, the situation seems to have changed. If De Jong is indeed out until November then he will miss the first El Clasico of the season. That would hand Real Madrid an advantage, as Barcelona will be without one of their most important players.
Barcelona superstar could miss El Clasico vs Real Madrid
De Jong’s future at Barcelona was in doubt not too long ago. Since then, things have improved drastically for him.
The Dutch midfielder is back to being a nailed-on starter for the club and an integral part of Xavi’s plans. Thus, his injury will come as a blow to Barcelona, not only for the game against Real Madrid but the several other ones that he is going to miss as well.
Of course, Real Madrid have not had great luck when it comes to injuries either. Several of their key players are out on the sidelines right now. And while they have made a good start to the season, one cannot rule out the chances of their form fading away later just like it did last season.
