With Real Madrid losing to Atletico at the weekend, Barcelona have gone top of the La Liga table. Once again this season, it feels like it could be a direct race between the two El Clasico rivals for the league title. It is not just on the pitch that the two might end up competing either but for transfer targets as well.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have had somewhat different transfer strategies in recent years. The former have been going after as much quality as they can get as long as it fits their financial constraints. On the other hand, Los Blancos have been much more careful with their signings.

Both seem to have common transfer target at the moment though. One of the top young talents in world football.

Real Madrid and Manchester City have been heavily linked with Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen recently. As reported by Esport 3 (via Fichajes), Barcelona also do not lose sight of the developments of the German international.

There is no release clause in Wirtz’s contract. And Bayer Leverkusen could look for a figure around €100 million to let their star player go.

Wirtz made a brilliant start at Bayer Leverkusen at the senior level, before suffering a serious injury. There were doubts as to whether he would be the same player upon returning.

He most definitely is. In fact, Wirtz is still just 20 years of age and is expected to get better with experience.

The German international has continued to perform at a high level for Bayer Leverkusen and is one of the biggest reasons why they have made a splendid start to the season and seem to be genuine Bundesliga contenders this time around. They sit at second, behind Bayern Munich only on goal difference.
