Zinedine Zidane is considered one of the best players in the history of the game. And while he is often underrated as a manager, what he achieved in the Real Madrid hot seat has to unquestionably put him in consideration for that category as well. The Frenchman guided Los Blancos to three straight Champions League titles. Nobody had won the competition back-to-back before that.
He returned for a second stint at Real Madrid and did a pretty good job once again. While success in the Champions League did not arrive, he did win the league.
Zidane would leave Real Madrid after the 2020/21 season and has been out of management since then. It is quite clear that he is waiting for the right project. And now, it looks like his future might lie in France.
For a long time, Zidane was linked with the French national team job. Rumours of a return to Real Madrid have never been far away either. But it looks like his next destination could be Marseille. But only on one condition.
Real Madrid icon Zinedine Zidane ‘agrees’ return to management
As reported by FranceBleu (via The Sun), Zidane has agreed with the PIF to become manager at Marseille. But only if the takeover is complete.
PIF are believed to be looking for a takeover at Marseille. They have already found success at Newcastle United.
Zidane is believed to have grown up as a supporter of Marseille. In the past, he has admitted that he regrets never having represented the club during his career.
Zidane was born in Marseille but started his career at Cannes. He would then move to Bordeaux before making a move to Juventus, turning him into a true superstar of the game. After five years in Turin, Real Madrid would shell out a then world-record €77.5 million fee to sign the Frenchman in 2001. It is there that he would retire.
