Real Madrid have not made an impressive start to the season in terms of performances, as a number of their displays have left fans disappointed. At the same time, one cannot question how effective they have been in terms of results, winning all of their games except for the 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid away at the Metropolitano Stadium.

This is a transitional period for the club without doubt. And they have not been helped by the fact that several of their key players are out injured at the moment.

Also, they seem to be gradually moving away from the Old Guard. And their lack of game time has not left them happy.

As reported by The Athletic, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have both lost their status as starters. And it has left them unhappy.

Two Real Madrid superstars are unhappy with their roles

Kroos and Modric are two all-time legends of the competition. It will be hard for others to achieve what those two have done over their time at Santiago Bernabeu.

At the same time, it is important to recognise that both are in the twilight of their careers. While they might still have a lot of individual quality, playing them together does not seem to be a great option anymore.

Carlo Ancelotti did start the two of them together in the recent game against Atletico Madrid and the result was not great. Although it must be mentioned that Kroos did score a fantastic goal on the day.

There is a lot of competition in the middle of the park at Real Madrid right now. Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde might have all moved ahead of Kroos and Modric in the pecking order. It will be sad to see them leave one day but that is football. That is life.
