Real Madrid’s centre-back ranks are looking paper-thin at the moment. Eder Militao, arguably the best central defender that the club have in their ranks, tore his ACL in the first game of the campaign against Athletic Bilbao and could be out for the rest of the situation. David Alaba is dealing with fitness issues as well although his problem is believed to be short-term.

In the long run, one has to point out that Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez are all past 30 years of age. And there have been question marks regarding their performances as well.

As a result, it would not be a surprise if Real Madrid were to sign a new centre-back in the not-too-distant future. They have been linked with a few in recent times. But competition seems to be pretty tough.

As reported by Fichajes, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Manchester United are closely monitoring Jose Maria Gimenez. Atletico Madrid have doubts about the continuity of the centre-back.

Gimenez has been at Atletico Madrid since 2013 and he has made almost 300 appearances for the club. He has also appeared more than 80 times for the Uruguay national team.

As a result, it is not hard to see why so many top clubs would be interested in a player of that calibre and experience if he did become available. Gimenez’s current deal with Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2025.

So, Atletico Madrid might have a decision to make next summer. Gimenez would be 29 by then and would have only a year left on his contract as well. Thus, if a good offer was on the table, one would expect the Spanish club to consider it.

It has not been uncommon for players to represent both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in recent years. Could Gimenez be the next to do that?
