Real Madrid are believed to be close to announcing the contract extension of Vinicius Jr. The Brazilian winger has emerged as one of the club’s most important players over the past couple of years and is considered by many as the face of the team. So, it is certainly a positive step for Los Blancos to say the least.

Of course, Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching team deserve a lot of credit for the development of Vinicius. He has gone from an inconsistent wonderkid whose future at the club was in doubt to one of the very best players in the world.

It is hard to see Vinicius leave Real Madrid anytime soon. He is one of those players who could potentially spend his entire career at Santiago Bernabeu.

But it looks like there is one club that he might end up joining in the future. It is a promise that he made to his father and one that he seems keen to keep.

As reported by 90min, Vinicius said in an interview with France Football and L’Equipe:

"“I think I could stay here my whole career, but the club of my life is Flamengo. I promised my father I would go back one day. I have to keep this promise.”"

Vinicius came up through the youth ranks of Flamengo and got his first taste of senior football there. He made almost 50 appearances for the Brazilian club before making the move to Real Madrid.

After some tough early years at Real Madrid, where there were question marks about his ability to affect games in the final third of the pitch, Vinicius has managed to establish himself as one of the best players in the world. And he is not expected to return to the Brazilian league anytime soon. But judging from his recent comments, it looks like it is very possible that he could end his career at Flamengo, where it all began for him.
